Handyman Services

A handyman company provides a very necessary service to homeowners, offering help with routine maintenance around a home.  The amount of services vary, but most handy-man companies offer literally hundreds of services, from changing a light bulb, to cleaning gutters, to performing scheduled maintenance such as changing air filters and vacuuming behind the refrigerator.  This type of firm requires real dedication and top notch organizational skills. Many handyman companies are a one person shop, where the owner does all the scheduling, estimating, actual work and keeps the books.  Some  companies offer 24 hour service and have dozens of trucks and workers.  A good example of a large and very well organized company is a major franchise such as Case Handyman Services.  Case also has a division that offers design-then-build services, and both of these companies serve to greatly increase each others volume.

Handyman companies are composed of somewhat skilled individuals that can do a variety of tasks.  If there are many workers in the company, then each worker may be a specialist at a trade.  If not, then the craftsperson might be a good carpenter, working out of a nice work van, who knows how to do modest electrical and plumbing tasks, set tile and even do painting.  Jobs usually last from a few hours to a whole day, but could lead into a very large job, such as a kitchen renovation or an addition.  If your company has the capability to do these larger jobs, then go for it.  If not, be realistic and refer it to someone who is good at this type of work.

Most of the time the estimating, performing the work, and collecting the fee are done by the craftsperson themselves.  The heavy logistical needs of a handyman company may  require that someone is working the phone and scheduling all the jobs.  Some firms even have salespeople that create an on-the-spot quote and then set an appointment to perform the work.  The salesperson would convey all the needed information to the craftsperson, with write-ups, materials needed and pictures of the job site area.

Handyman services can be very profitable, yet demand dedication and organization.  There is a growing demand for these services, as the general public seems to do less and less on their own.  If you feel you have the abilities to organize, delegate and provide top-notch customer service, then this might be the one for you.
